Global warming an imminent threat
Philippines News.Net Tuesday 24th November, 2009
International scientists, working on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have given a report on their most recent data and observations.
Updated projections show an acceleration of change that has rendered other reports conservative.
The 26 scientists have decided that climate change is accelerating beyond expectations, with the Arctic heading for an ice-free summer by 2030 and sea levels reaching an upper limit of two metres by the turn of the century.
The scientists have observed that sea levels rose more than five centimetres over the past 15 years, about 80 per cent higher than IPCC projections made in 2001.
The Arctic sea ice melt over the last two years was about 40 per cent greater than the last forecast.
In the report, the scientists concluded that global emissions would have to peak then decline rapidly within a decade if the worst of climate change is to be avoided.
