DAVAO CITY June 13 (PIA)- At first it was a solemn 120th Independence Day commemoration here, just like the other independence day rites that preceded it.
The traditional flag-raising rites was attended by City Mayor Sara Duterte and Guest-of-Honor Major General Noel Clement, commander of the Philippine Army 10th Infantry Division.
It was followed by the 21-gun salute and the presentation of the wreath at the Rizal Monument.
City Mayor Sara Duterte delivered a short welcome address. "The contribution of Davao City to nation-building is to make this city peaceful and progressive." Said the Mayor.
During the intermission, independence day ceremony host Romy Torres called on Filipino-American singer Jessica Reynoso who was part of the Voice of the Philippines Season 1. The singer who hails from Laguna and is part of the Black-Eyed Peas new single "Ring The Alarm", sang her rendition of Alicia Keys "If I Aint Got You" and followed It up with an a capella of "Dahil sa Yo."
After she performed and to the surprise of the crowd, Reynoso called on her Voice Philippines mentor Allan Pineda more popularly known as Apl de Ap who sang "We can be Anything."
The performance of Reynoso and of Apl de Ap who co-founded the chart-topping international hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas was not announced by the City Government.
Apl de Ap was in the city for the launch of the Creative Innovations Program, a project of the British Council, his foundation (Apl de Ap Foudation), Department of Trade and Industry and the Thames International Business School. He also committed to help the City Government in its culture and arts program.
Meanwhile guest-of-honor Major General Noel Clement in his speech said that heroism today is no longer limited to being shot by a firing squad in Luneta.
"Our modern day and unsung heroes are alive. They are not monuments, with the advent of technology their exploits and good deeds are magnified on social media. They are our OFWs, our tireless traffic enforcers, honest taxi drivers, hardworking housewives, vigilant environmentalists, it could be us, it could be you." Clement said in his speech. (PIA/RG Alama)
