RIZAL, Kalinga, Oct. 8 (PIA) -- The Australian government, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, distributed relief goods to 498 families who were affected by the recent typhoon in this town.

Australia Deputy Head of Mission in the Philippines Mat Kimberley said the Australian government recognizes the need to provide humanitarian assistance to save human lives, relieve human suffering and restore the dignity of families displaced by Typhoon Ompong.

He said he was saddened seeing on their way to Rizal the destroyed rice fields, livelihood and crops. "I am sorry for your loss. Seeing you, I have high regard for your strength and resilience," he said.

He said Australia as a friend will continue to be a responsive neighbor and stands ready to support the Philippines and the Filipino people especially in times of emergencies and disasters.

"We hope that the family kits will help you and your family meet some basic needs," he said.

Each package contains two sleeping blankets, two mosquito nets, two jerry cans and tarpaulin, hygiene kit, and plastic mat.

He hopes the municipality of Rizal will quickly recover from the impact of typhoon Ompong.

"To the families, I wish you all the best in restarting your homes and livelihoods. Take care of yourselves and your family. Together we can overcome these challenges," Kimberley said.

He urged the people to be always prepared, to have grab bags ready, listen to authorities and evacuate early to safe places if needed and always keep in mind that saving lives is most important. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
