LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Nov. 7 (PIA) - Employees from member-agencies of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) joined the earthquake drill held on Nov. 5 at the beach front here.

Avenix Arenas, spokesperson of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), said the drill was in support to the 4th Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), which coincided with the observance of World Tsunami Awareness Day.

She said the activity sought to intensify the local communities' earthquake and tsunami preparedness to raise public awareness of the risk caused by tsunamis, and to strengthen the commitment of national and local agencies in building safe communities.

Some 80 council members, who pretended as beachgoers, performed the "duck, cover and hold" position when the PDRRMO staff turned on the siren to signify that an earthquake hit the area.

Part of the scenario is the raising of Tsunami Alert Level 3 in the coastal community of Lingayen.

When the siren stopped, the beachgoers evacuated the area while responders attended to the injured victims.

Participants rode in rescue vehicles for them to be transported to the identified evacuation area at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

After the conduct of the earthquake and tsunami drill, participants convened for an exit conference to discuss observations and recommendations.

One of the notable suggestions is for council members to ensure maximum participation of communities near their offices during NSED to increase the public's awareness on disaster preparedness against earthquakes.

In behalf of the PDRRMC, Arenas expressed her gratitude to all the participants who made the earthquake and tsunami drill possible despite of the brief preparation.

Netizens also participated in the 4th Quarter NSED by posting their photos and/or videos on social media with the hashtags #HandaAngMayAlam and #BidaAngHanda while doing their preparedness measures. (JNPD/AMB/PIA Pangasinan)
