SAN JUAN, La Union, June 11 (PIA) -- Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials and student leaders in the province of La Union learned about disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) on Tuesday, June 10.
The whole-day training at EM Royalle Hotel, this town, is organized by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Ilocos region.
Molech Rabbi S. Ferido, training specialist of OCD-1, said the activity is one of their office's thrust of increasing awareness on disaster resiliency of the basic society sectors to include the youth and students.
"This training underscores the importance of the role of the youth sector in building disaster-resilient communities and individuals," said Ferido.
He also shared that the OCD capacitates yearly the 14 basic sectors as identified by the National Anti-Poverty Commission.
"In the region, we started capacitating these sectors in aim for a safer, climate-adaptive, and disaster-resilient Region 1 since last year," added Ferido.
A total of 45 participants learned additional knowledge on DRRM concepts and mechanisms from resource persons from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Commission on Human Rights, and Philippine Red Cross.
The 14 basic sectors are: Artisanal Fisherfolk, Farmers and Landless Rural Workers, Urban Poor, Indigenous Peoples, Formal Labor and Migrant Workers, Workers in the Informal Sector, Women, Children, Youth and Students, Senior Citizens, Persons with Disabilities, Victims of Disasters and Calamities, Non-Government Organizations, and Cooperatives.
