TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, July 5 (PIA) - Members of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) monitoring and enforcement team with media partners inspected selected hardware suppliers in the region to assure that construction supplies being sold to the public conform to Philippine Standards (PS).

The team, headed by Asst. Regional Director Ruben Diciano and joined by Vhon Villaruel of the DTI - Bureau of Product Standards, took samples of steel bars and checked essential attributes such as markings.

Serafin Umoquit, one of the members of the enforcement team said consumers should be aware of the specifications of what they are buying.

Umoquit said a steel bar that conforms to PS must have a clearly embossed manufacture's identifying mark or log, its actual mass, among others.

To ensure safety of products and to avoid untoward incidents, Umoquit advise consumers to purchase and patronize construction materials that are approved by the Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS).

"For example, there is no 9mm steel bars but when consumers order such, there are suppliers who give 8mm but with price higher than the suggested retail price (SRP) of an 8mm steel bar especially if the consumer is not aware of the size," Umoquit said.

On the other hand, the team urged establishment owners to post the prices of their products in areas visible to the consumers and to check the irregularities of products from manufacturers or suppliers.

Should there be any irregularity, business owners are urged to report it immediately to DTI for corresponding action.

Linda C. Tan, also a member of the team, said business owners who sell substandard products will be issued Notice of Violation and will be given 48 hours from the receipt of the notice to submit their explanation or personally appear at any DTI office. (MDCT/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
