PEnABLANCA, Cagayan, July 16 (PIA) - - The chief executive of this town has urged every Penablancano and other stakeholders to support his vision of creating a healthy and malnutrition-free municipality.
During the kick-off ceremony of this year's Nutrition Month Celebration, Mayor Washington M. Taguinod emphasized the essence of the theme: "Kumain nang Wasto at Maging Aktibo...Push Natin to", which encourages every family to be conscious on the foods served in the table, the proper diet and active engagement in physical activities to keep every Penablancano well-nourished and healthy.
"We keep on reminding and educating our people on what to do to make every member of the family healthy. We will never cease of creating awareness and educating the public until we achieve a healthy and malnutrition-free Penablanca," the mayor said.
As part of the month-long celebration, skills exhibition of students from the different elementary schools on poster-slogan making was conducted during the kick-off event.
Alex Sibbaluca, municipal environment and natural resources officer and chair of the contest, said despite the far distance of the elementary schools to the town hall, students never hesitated to showcase their talents in the poster-slogan making contest.
The student artist from Dodan Elementary School bagged the first place, followed by the representatives from Quibal Elementary School and Sisim Elementary School who placed second and third, respectively. Callao Elementary School and Nanguilattan Elementary School bets are in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Other contestants received consolation prizes from the municipal government.
He said the mayor was amazed on how the young students expressed their bright ideas on attaining and sustaining well-nourished communities through arts.
On her part, Emily Eloisa Taguinod, municipal nutrition action officer, said the municipal government has been conducting capacity building to the barangay nutrition council members on monitoring nutritional status of the people in the barangay and on how to improve further their programs to achieve the vision of creating a healthy and malnutrition-free municipality.
In the latest nutrition program evaluation of the Regional Nutrition Council, Maria Gisela Lonzaga, nutrition program coordinator, reported that Penablanca placed 5th among municipalities with best nutrition program implementation.
Other than these, the nutrition action officer said they also conducted series of advocacy activities in the different schools all over the town to include the conduct of Zumba exercises, cooking festival, Search for A1 child, medical check-up for pre-school and schoolchildren, pregnant and lactating mothers and also for senior citizens.
She said they go up even to the mountains and the hard-to-reach barangays of the town to bring the services of the municipal health and nutrition office nearer to the people.
Penablanca is the home of the largest protected landscape and seascape in Northern Luzon and the tourism flagship destination in Cagayan Valley of its famous caves, white rocks, majestic hills and lofty mountains. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
