DAVAO CITY (PIA) - The head of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Compostela Valley assured the readiness of firemen to respond should disasters topple buildings in the province.
Fire Marshall Randolph Arbotante said the BFP does not only handle fire prevention and suppression but also possesses the capability to handle rescue operations on collapsed structures.
He said they have a team known as BFP Special Rescue Unit that will perform rescue operation on collapsed structures.
Arbotante said he was banking on the capability of the Emergency Response Center/ Central 911 to respond accordingly with the availability of its modern equipment.
"Still we need to capacitate the rescuers down to the grassroots level in saving the public," he added, citing the fact that the BFP is the lead agency to conduct rescue operations.
Franz Irag, administrative officer of the Office of Civil Defense in Davao region said the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council follows certain protocols in responding to disasters.
He said it is the call of the response cluster of which the BFP is a member to conduct rescue operation.
Irag said the BFP has to capacitate private rescue groups in responding to disasters knowing that the government cannot do rescue operations by itself.
"We are in continuous partnership with the private rescue groups in Davao region in order that we have a helping hand in time of emergencies," he said. (PIA-11)
