DAVAO CITY (PIA)- A city councilor here, is crafting an ordinance requiring organizers of sports events to have an emergency action plan in case their participants suffer heart attack or other serious medical condition.
Councilor Joselle Villafuerte in a privilege speech said the city is fast becoming the sports tourism hub in Mindanao with the Palarong Pambansa, Ironman 70.3 and the recent Kadayawan Triathlon being held here.
Incidentally, she said these events are also prone to emergencies just like the recent Kadayawan Triathlon where prominent businessman died of cardiac arrest.
Villafuerte said the proposed law will require athletes joining competitions to show proof that they are indeed fit for the race.
She said the proposed law will also require all ambulances of the Emergency Response Center Central 911 the apparatus called Automated External Defibrillators to be used as first aid for cardiac arrest.
"We will make an inventory during the public hearing so that if needed, we will come up with a budget for purchase of AEDs," Villafuerte said.
She stressed that part of the emergency action plan is having an AED on standby in the event, so that anyone who experiences cardiac arrest will be effectively assisted. (PIA XI-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
