TAGBILARAN CITY, Aug. 20 (PIA) -- The Provincial Government of Bohol has ordered the temporary ban of pork and pork-related products including the transportation of live pigs to the province as a way of safeguarding its own hog industry from the African Swine Fever (ASF).

In a statement released on Tuesday morning, Gov. Arthur Yap said these products will only be allowed entry into the province if accompanied by a Veterinary Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian.

A shipping permit issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) Quarantine Services is also required.

As for pork and pork-related products, Bohol will also not accept these products unless accompanied by the appropriate Certificate of Meat Inspection from the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).

The ban is due to reports of pig deaths affecting some parts of Luzon where the Department of Agriculture (DA) has yet to confirm nor deny if the hog deaths are due to ASF.

Yap said he will also issue a memo to concerned Bohol mayors to help assign personnel to assist in the port quarantine efforts while the Provincial Veterinarian has also been asked to coordinate with municipal mayors, Municipal Agricultural Officers (MAOs), Barangay Livestock Aide (BALA) and technicians to heighten their monitoring of farms and do early reporting.

Yap has also instructed hog farmers to avoid swine swill feeding and the immediate installation of bio security measures such as putting up of foot baths and regular disinfection of farms.

Vaccination against health cholera and deworming was also suggested to be implemented.

"Considering that the hog industry in Bohol affects more than 30,000 households in 21 municipalities valued at more than P6 billion, we have to be proactive in ensuring the protection and sustainability of our local hog industry," the governor said. (ecb/PIA7-Bohol)
