QUEZON CITY, Sept 13 (PIA) -- The Provincial Government and the Municipality of Torrijos will lead the celebration of the 119th anniversary of the Battle of Pulang Lupa on September 13.

Highlighting the event are the wreath laying ceremonies and the handing out of patents at the Pulang Lupa Historical Park, in Brgy. Bolo.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu was invited as guest of honor.

Also expected to participate are local officials from the municipalities and descendants of the Battle of Pulang Lupa heroes.

On September 13, 1900, Filipino soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Maximo Abad captured US Infantrymen led by Captain Devereux Shields in Torrijos.

Sentro ng Wika at Kultura Director Randy Nobleza of the Marinduque State University said the battle started in a barangay in Sta. Cruz town where Shields launched a reconnaissance operation against Filipino troops.

Director Nobleza said the Battle of Pulang Lupa and the Battle of Paye (July 31, 1900, in Boac) are two of the five inspirational battles where Filipinos defeated American occupying forces.

The message of the Battle of Pulang Lupa, Nobleza added, is for people to take action rather than become apathetic to what is happening to country.

The other inspiration battles are the Battle of San Mateo (Morong, Rizal), Siege of Catubig (Samar), Battle of Makahambos Hill, Battle of Mabitac (Laguna) and Battle of Balangiga (Samar).

Unfortunately, Marinduque Vice Governor Jun Bacorro shared on his Facebook account that these successful battles in the province during the Filipino-Armerican War "led to the first application in the Philippines of concentration camps in the island's town centers, a highly coercive measure that finally led to the surrender of the Filipino soldiers led by Abad with his men on April 15, 1901."

Torrijos has been celebrating the Battle of Pulang Lupa for days now with various mobile services in partnership with Land Transportation Office (LTO)-Mimaropa and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Land Transportation Office-Mimaropa Regional Director Hilarion Ulep himself led the Road Safety Caravan serminars during the first week of September.

Aside from the seminar, staff of the LTO Mimaropa office facilitated the mobile vehicle registration, renewal of licenses and student driver permit applications at the Torrijos Covered Court, in Brgy. Poblacion.

The PSA-Mimaropa, on the other hand, set up a desk at the MDRRMC building function hall and provided mobile civil registry services. (LP/PIA-Mimaropa)
