TUBA, Benguet, Sept. 20(PIA) -- With twinning relationship seen as a way to promote cooperation and exchange of experiences and information, this town and Tabuk City in Kalinga are urged to forge sisterhood ties to further develop their tourism potentials.

Tabuk City Tourism Officer Arlene Odiem Cordillera region's representative to the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines, said that having twinning relationship would be very helpful for both LGUs to improve or advance their tourism industry.

"My request from our dear officials is for the Tourism office of Tuba and the Tourism Office of Tabuk to establish a Tourism Twinning Relationship for a lasting partnership on tourism programs most especially the programs which are applicable to both towns," Odiem said in her message during the opening of Tuba's 6th Ava Festival on Sept. 16.

"I believe that partnership or networking or exchange program thru sisterhood is a very effective way to promote and market our products, our tourism industry," she said adding they help each other and learn from each other's strength and best practices.

She noted that Tabuk City and Tuba are both still discovering and developing their tourism potentials in the different areas particularly on eco-tourism. Both, she said, have undeveloped natural wonders.

Tabuk City and Tuba are also gateways of bigger tourism potentials of nearby towns such as Baguio City for Tuba and Tinglayan, Kalinga or even Mountain Province for Tabuk City.

Odiem said both towns should not only be gateways but should be the getaway destinations. However, development must take caution particularly on culture and environment aspects.

Tuba celebrated this week the Ava Festival highlighting the ava or taro plant which is the One-Town One-Product of the municipality.

The festival was formally opened by local officials led by Mayor Clarita Sal-ongan and Vice Mayor Maria Carantes and Benguet Governor Melchor Diclas.

Thru the festival, the ava and its bi-products and other produce of Tuba are promoted to increase market opportunities for the commodities and to develop other skills of the farmers. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
