SAN FERNANDO CITY, Feb. 21 (PIA) - The province of La Union remains to be free of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
This was confirmed by Medical Officer Rheuel Bobis, COVID-19 focal person of the Department of Health Region 1, in a press conference facilitated by the Philippine Information Agency on Wednesday.
"Hanggang sa kasalukuyan ay COVID-19 free po ang La Union kaya walang dahilan upang mag-panic," said Bobis.
He confirmed, however, that there were seven recorded patients under investigation (PUIs) in the province as of Feb. 17.
"All these PUIs were admitted to the hospitals within La Union, but their laboratory tests yielded negative of the virus," Bobis said.
The medical officer also said the PUIs had been discharged from the health facilities after the tests from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine were out.
To fight the threat of the disease, Governor Francisco Emmanuel R. Ortega III issued a directive to create a provincial task force led by the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
On Feb. 13, he already met with the members of the task force for an immediate risk assessment and action planning.
Since then, the PHO has heightened its surveillance on cases of influenza-like illness and has been conducting massive information dissemination through the distribution of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials in district hospitals.
Inside the provincial capitol, hygiene kits are also stationed in venues where there is a gathering of a large crowd.
Meanwhile, Ortega advises the public to remain steadfast in light of the present health concern.
"In the midst of this health crisis and everything that has been happening in this world today, I ask each and everyone of you to be vigilant and to always be on the look out and to take utmost care of your and your family's wellness," the governor said.
He added, "By God's grace, mercy, and loving kindness, we shall overcome this as a province and as a nation, in the name of Jesus." (JCR/JND/PIA La Union)
