NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, May 29 (PIA6) -- Rice farmers registered with the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) may get free certified inbred rice seeds from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) through their respective city or municipal agriculture offices.
RSBSA registered rice farmers, whether individual or members of farmers associations or cooperatives in the region, may avail of the free certified seeds and must observe minimum health protocols when getting their free rice seeds.
PhilRice Negros Branch Director Dr. Gerardo F. Estoy, Jr. thanked the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 6 and the different Offices of Provincial Agriculturist and Local Government Units for their unwavering assistance in the distribution of certified seeds to farmer beneficiaries.
Based on PhilRice Negros data as of May 15, 2020 for Region 6, a total of 79,751 bags were already delivered to the different provinces and about 34,324 bags were distributed to a total of 10,581 rice farmers.
Negros Occidental received 9,300 bags while 4,326 bags were distributed to 1,695 rice farmers.
Some 3,475 bags were already delivered to Aklan; 18,002 bags for Antique, about 8,048 bags were distributed to 2,384 farmers; Capiz received 18,858 bags and about 7,451 bags were distributed to 2081 farmers; while 30,116 bags were delivered to Iloilo province and about 14,499 bags were distributed to 4,421 farmers as of May 15.
Each bag contains 20 kilograms certified inbred seeds of regional recommended varieties of rice for Region 6.
The distribution will continue until all available seeds are distributed to farmers who will still plant during the 2020 wet season.
