MARAWI CITY, June 1 (PIA) -- To ensure the availability of fish supply in Marawi City amid the coronavirus disease (COVID19) pandemic, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform - Lanao del Sur (MAFAR LDS) dispersed 100,000 tilapia fingerlings in the lake waters of Barangay Pindolonan, this city.

The dispersal of fingerlings is part of the response of MAFAR LDS to the COVID-19 crisis and to promote small-scale fishing in the city and Lanao del Sur.

MAFAR LDS provincial head Pangalian A. Balindong Jr. said they "aim to repopulate freshwater bodies with non-invasive and indigenous fish species which will help the fisherfolks increase their productivity and eventually improve their living conditions".

Some 82,000 tilapia fingerlings were also distributed to fishpond owners coming from municipalities of Tugaya, Masiu, Piagapo, Kapai, among others.

"We are targeting Lakes Dapao and Uyaan for our next dispersal," Balindong added.

MAFAR has also been distributing vegetable seeds to internally displaced persons of Marawi CIty and to other households since the community quarantine due to COVID-19 started.

"This was to promote backyard gardening and provide our IDPs the opportunity to produce fresh and healthy food in their backyards," said Balindong.

MAFAR LDS and Task Force Bangon Marawi recently turned-over a farm tractor to each seven (7) farm cooperatives from barangays Sagonsongan, Mipaga, Dulay Proper, Guimba, Timbangalan, East Basak Malutlut, and Sugod. (LELA/PIA ICIC)
