BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, August 3 (PIA) - Governor Carlos Padilla has welcomed the commitment of President Rodrigo Duterte to provide more benefits for farmers to enable the country's agricultural economy to rise with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Padilla was referring to President Duterte's State pf the Nation Address (SONA) commitment through the Department of Agriculture (DA) proposal for Congress regarding the P66 billion stimulus package to help farmers and fisherfolk to recover from the pandemic.

"We welcome this assistance to our farmers because it will inspire them to go on despite the problems that they are facing. President Duterte's promise for the agriculture sector will encourage our farmers to do their share on food security," he said.

Padilla said that Nueva Vizcaya, being an agricultural province has been constantly recognized by the DA for the quality and quantity of farmers' produce either in rice, corn, fruits and vegetables.

He said that despite the effects of the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL) for the farmers, the provincial government has been aggressive in finding ways and means to sustain their production.

"President Duterte's commitment to the agriculture sector will help our fellow local government units in sourcing out funds to alleviate the plight of our farmers especially in the countryside," Padilla said.

In his 5th SONA, President Duterte stressed that "the growth of our economy depends on a robust agricultural sector".

DA Cagayan Valley's Facebook account said Regional Executive Director Narciso Edillo recently reported that they have successfully distributed a total of 113, 883 vegetable seed packs in the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, and Batanes since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On vegetable seedling distribution, more than 813, 870 pesos has been allotted to the region's 5,030 households.

These assistances were given through the department's Plant, Plant, Plant Program (PPPP). (MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
