LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Aug. 9 (PIA) -- Governor Melchor Diclas appeals to the people of Benguet to continue to remain vigilant and to strictly adhere to the public health standards as COVID-19 cases in the province and its nearby city of Baguio continue to rise.

"Be vigilant and follow all the health protocols, and more important is stay healthy to prevent the possible contraction of the COVID-19," Diclas said in a virtual press briefer following the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force meeting on Friday.

Diclas reminded his constituents to always follow the minimum health requirements such as the use of face masks and even face shields and gloves especially for those in the sectors personally dealing with people or clients and those transacting money. Always practice social and physical distancing when outside residences.

He also reminded that people should avoid non-essential travels outside their homes and always maintain proper hygiene by hand washing and regular sanitation.

Diclas reported that as of August 7, the province already recorded 86 COVID-19 confirmed cases with 24 active cases and 61 recoveries.

Aside from the 86 confirmed cases, at least four returning overseas Filipino workers who also contracted the COVID-19 are in the province but are not reflected in the data of Benguet as they have been recorded in the DOH national data.

Of the total number of COVID-19 cases in the province, Diclas said that only 10 percent are symptomatic to critical condition who need additional medical care. The 90 percent are asymptomatic cases whorecover from the disease by having healthier body with higher immune system.

The governor also reported that on August 6, the province recorded its first COVID-19 related death, a 58 year old male from Itogon. The patient had brain herniation with no known or diagnosed respiratory related disease unfortunately, when he was swabbed, it turned out was COVID-19 positive.

Meanwhile, Diclas together with Benguet General Hospital personnel led by Chief of Hospital Dr. Meliarazon Dulay and staff of the Office of the Benguet Congressman, sent off at least eight COVID-19 patients this week.

As a tradition, the patients received flowering plants and fruit bearing tree seedlings to remind them patients of their battle and victory against the COVID-19. Food packs from the office of Cong. Eric Go Yap were also given to the patients. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
