DAGUPAN CITY, Aug. 15 (PIA) -- Renovation and rehabilitation of the Dagupan City People's Astrodome has commenced this August to revive the glory of one of the city's landmarks.

Mayor Marc Brian Lim said no improvement has been done for the Astrodome for the past years and a renovation is a much needed recourse for the area.

"For the longest time, the Astrodome has been neglected. Marami nang kailangang ayusin at i-repair, to think it is the biggest indoor gathering space owned by the government in the city," Lim said in an interview.

The city plans to transform the main facade of the Astrodome into an extension of the city library and study center as the building is located within the university belt and educational institution area.

"We want to make the study center and library accessible to students when we resume face-to-face classes," Mayor Lim said in an interview.

Provincial offices of national line agencies that are housed at the Astrodome building would still be given spaces that will be renovated by the city, he assured.

Meanwhile, the City Planning and Development Office said the new Astrodome would have a new roofing, landscaping, reception area, driveway and more parking spaces.

"The interior or main hall would also have a facelift complete with new acoustic board design for the walls while the outside area would be elevated by about less than a meter as a precaution against flooding," said zoning officer Joji Torio.

The more than P20-million renovation project is expected to be finished within 270 days but is being fast tracked to have a December 2020 deadline if situations permit, according to the City Engineer's Office.

The Astrodome building is home to provincial and satellite offices of many national line agencies like the Commission on Elections, Bureau of Immigration, Philippine Information Agency, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the city government-owned Library.

It also serves as an evacuation area during disasters and is a witness to many historic events of the city. (JCR/JND/VHS, PIA-Pangasinan)
