MARAWI CITY, Oct. 22 (PIA) - The National Food Authority (NFA) in Lanao del Sur said it is buying palay from local farmers at P19 per kilo amid its plunging prices.
Khayamera Dialem, NFA Lanao del Sur administrative officer, said this is their way of 'helping local farmers who find it difficult to sell at the price they want.'
She said they received reports that private rice millers buy palay at only P12 to P15 per kilo.
"We buy dry and clean palay at 14 percent moisture content. But we still buy even if it's not at 14 percent moisture content. We will dry it as we have a mechanical dryer and solar dryer," she further said.
Dialem said they put in place a buying station in the municipality of Poona Bayabao. They also accept walk-in farmers in their warehouse in Marawi City.
Moreover, NFA personnel visits palay the producing municipalities in the province, namely Butig, Lumba-Bayabao, Poona-Bayabao, and Ditsaan-Ramain to pick-up the produce of farmers.
Meanwhile, Dialem urged local government units in the province to buy rice from NFA to help local farmers. "Kung mabilis po namin mabenta yung bigas namin, makakabili uli kami ng palay sa mga local farmers natin (If we can sell our rice quickly, we can buy palay again from our local farmers)," she added.
