MAASIN CITY, Jan. 20 (PIA) -- The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) introduced new directions for the coconut industry development, through Director, Governing Board Vicente Victor Veloso.
In the Provincial Coconut Industry Stakeholders Forum held on January 19, 2021 here, Veloso mentioned programs for the coconut industry to be infused in addition to other coconut development programs and projects throughout the country.
He mentioned first the master listing and the ID system for all coconut farmers, preferably those coming from the poorest of the poor; to resume the collection of coco levy funds which will depend on the assessment of how big the coco business will be; and the organization of cooperatives for every 1,000 hectares of farm lands.
In addition to these programs, he also submitted to PCA the need of the fertilization program where coco husks can be converted into organic fertilizers; the purchase of tractors; the United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) to serve the farmers, especially those who are really in financial need; and the installation of an embryo laboratory for hybrid seedlings production for every miller/processor.
Veloso who was installed in October 2020 yet said that with these programs, it can become the basis of the coconut industry road map in every municipality.
"These will surely boost the coco industry in the country, enhance farm productivity and uphold the interest of coco farmers."
On the other hand, PCA Provincial Coconut Development Manager Emiberto D. Acasio suggested to the body to create a Technical Working Group (TWG) that will assist the Southern Leyte Coconut Industry Development Council (SLCIDC) in monitoring the coconut industry in the province.
In the same venue, the Department of Trade and Industry through Guada Marie Babilonia presented the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis during the gathering of farmers association/organization representatives, national line agencies concerned, including the Philippine Information Agency, Department of Interior and Local Government, among others.
The day activity held at the Old DPWH FunctionHall was also attended by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee Chair on Agriculture, Pedro Fustanes who gave his short message on behalf of the provincial government. (nbq/rgc/PIA8-SoLeyte)
