NEGROS ORIENTAL, May 10 (PIA) -- The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has encouraged the coconut farmers in the province to join and submit their nomination and selection requirements on May 12 to reconstitute famer representatives in the PCA Board.
In a Zoom conference with provincial and regional nomination and screening committee, PCA Regional Manager Brendan Trasmonte said coconut farmers' organizations, association or cooperatives could best represent their groups and participate in the upcoming and provincial and regional conventions.
However, Trasmonte said the PCA provincial offices have already started accepting qualified nominees after an information campaign on the mechanics of the process with coco farmers in the province.
He said the qualified nominee must be a Filipino citizen, registered with the PCA's coconut farmers' registry, and owns not more than five hectares of coconut farm in the last ten years.
Trasmonste said the farmer representative nominated by coconut farmers organizations or cooperatives must be active for the past three years and have considerable experience and reputable track record in promoting coconut farmer's interest and welfare.
Coco farmer organizations, association or cooperative must be active in the past three years in the farmer organization and development or community enterprise development.
Fifty-one percent or majority of its members must be coconut farmers and coconut farm workers.
The PCA said the nominee must possess appropriate valid registration from the Securities and Exchange Commission or Cooperative Development Authority, or Department of Labor and Employment or any existing PCA accreditation.
Republic Act 11524 requires that the farmer representatives will be appointed by the President from a list of four nominees from each island group- Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Trasmonte said the process of the selection involves the collective voting of coconut farmers as a coconut farmer organization, association, or a cooperative, from provincial to regional levels and eventually, island-wide nomination.
The farmer representatives will be joined in the PCA Board by the secretaries of agriculture, finance, budget, science and technology, and trade, as well as the PCA administrator. (jct/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
