SEATTLE, Washington: Ecommerce giant Amazon.com has halted its Prime Day sale held yearly in India, according to its spokesperson on May 7, as the nation reels from an acute second wave of the coronavirus disease.

During the course of the last week, India registered 1.5 million additional cases and the highest fatalities on a day-to-day basis, as shortages of medical oxygen and fewer available beds pose major challenges to hospitals in handling the pandemic.

Tech company Google and Amazon.com, along with Indian organizations, have made collective efforts to assist India, with the second-highest populace worldwide, fight the pandemic by pooling resources and providing airlift services to transport medical gear. They have also contributed funds to purchase medical oxygen.

Amazon Prime Day, open exclusively to customers with Prime memberships, is usually a July event aimed at bolstering sales. Offering products at discounted rates is an important step by Amazon.com for marketing Prime, a service that offers swift delivery and services to stream audio, video, and music, among others, as incentives for engaging its subscriber base to shop more on Amazon.
