Hatchback sales in India stood at 98,784 units in December 2025, marking a strong 50.2 percent year-on-year growth compared to December 2024. On a month-on-month basis, the segment also posted healthy gains, up 11.27 percent over November 2025, underlining renewed demand across entry-level and premium hatchbacks.
Hatchback Sales Dec 2025 Baleno and Swift drive segment growth
Maruti Baleno emerged as the highest-selling hatchback in December 2025, with 22,108 units, registering a massive 142.63 percent YoY growth. Baleno also saw strong MoM momentum, growing 60.39 percent over November, making it the biggest contributor to the segments overall expansion.
Close behind was Maruti Swift, which recorded 18,767 units, up 80.09 percent YoY. However, Swift sales dipped slightly on a MoM basis by 4.90 percent, indicating some moderation after a strong November. Maruti WagonR continued to be a volume contributor with 14,575 units, though sales declined 15.77 percent YoY and remained largely flat MoM.
In contrast, Maruti Alto posted 10,829 units, growing 46.14 percent YoY and 2.16 percent MoM, highlighting steady demand in the entry-level segment. Toyota Glanza (rebadged Maruti Baleno) clocked 6,451 units, up 85 percent YoY and 28.20 percent MoM, mirroring Balenos strong performance.
Tata Tiago / EV recorded 5,826 units, registering a 16.38 percent YoY increase, though sales dipped 2.71 percent MoM. Tata Altroz sold 2,871 units, posting a solid 53.86 percent YoY growth, despite a 4.71 percent MoM decline. Hyundais hatchback lineup delivered mixed results. Hyundai i10 NIOS stood at 4,010 units, down 10.67 percent YoY, while Hyundai i20 sold 3,339 units, marginally lower by 3.30 percent YoY.
Among smaller players, Maruti S-Presso posted 3,396 units, showing sharp growth both YoY and MoM, while Maruti Celerio and Maruti Ignis also recorded strong YoY gains. Electric hatchbacks continued to see gradual traction. MG Comet EV sold 1,143 units, up 63.29 percent YoY, while Citroen eC3 EV remained niche with 32 units. Citroen C3 showed strong YoY growth at 195.33 percent, albeit from a low base, while Renault Kwid continued to struggle with 369 units, down 41.24 percent YoY.
Overall outlook
December 2025 proved to be a strong month for hatchbacks, driven primarily by Maruti Suzukis high-volume models and supported by renewed traction in both entry-level and premium segments. With nearly 99,000 units sold, hatchbacks continue to remain a key pillar of the Indian passenger vehicle market, even as SUVs gain ground across price bands.
