Indias passenger vehicle market saw strong volumes in calendar year 2025, with the top 10 cars together clocking 18,97,389 units, up from 17,83,062 units in CY 2024. While Maruti Suzuki continued its dominance with six models in the top 10, SUVs further strengthened their presence, accounting for half of the list.
Maruti Dzire emerged as the best-selling car of CY 2025, with sales of 2,14,488 units, up significantly from 1,67,988 units in CY 2024. Strong demand from private buyers as well as the fleet segment helped Dzire reclaim the top position, underlining the continued relevance of compact sedans in India.
Hyundai Creta finished second with 2,01,122 units, improving on its CY 2024 tally of 1,86,919 units. Creta remained the best-selling SUV in India, supported by consistent demand across petrol, diesel and turbo variants. Close behind was Tata Nexon, which recorded 2,00,561 units, up from 1,61,611 units last year. Nexons strong performance was aided by its wide powertrain mix, including petrol, diesel and EV options.
Wagon R and Ertiga deliver consistent volumes
Maruti Wagon R secured fourth place with 1,94,238 units, marginally higher than 1,90,855 units in CY 2024. Its practicality and value proposition continued to resonate with budget-conscious buyers. Maruti Ertiga followed closely, posting 1,92,025 units, almost identical to its CY 2024 performance of 1,90,091 units, reflecting stable demand in the MPV segment.
Maruti Swift registered 1,89,261 units, up from 1,72,808 units, benefitting from its strong brand recall and youthful appeal. Maruti Fronx continued its upward trajectory with 1,79,894 units, compared to 1,56,236 units in CY 2024, reinforcing the growing popularity of crossover-style SUVs.
Mahindra Scorpio also posted a solid year, with 1,76,988 units, improving over 1,66,364 units last year, driven by sustained demand for both Scorpio Classic and Scorpio-N. Maruti Brezza stood at 1,75,310 units, down from 1,88,160 units in CY 2024, indicating some pressure in the highly competitive compact SUV segment.
Tata Punch From No 1 to 2024 to No 10 in 2025
Rounding off the top 10 was Tata Punch, which sold 1,73,502 units, compared to 2,02,030 units in the previous year. Despite the decline, Punch remained among the countrys top-selling models. CY 2025 highlighted a clear SUV-heavy trend, with models like Creta, Nexon, Fronx, Scorpio, Brezza and Punch featuring prominently. At the same time, consistent performers such as Dzire, Swift, Wagon R and Ertiga showed that mass-market hatchbacks and sedans continue to play a crucial role in driving volumes in the Indian car market.
